Your health is your most valuable asset when exploring the remote corners of Uganda and Rwanda. While our modern safari vehicles and lodges provide a high level of comfort, being proactive about your well-being ensures that your memories are of the wildlife, not a stomach bug or a sunburn. Ngaro Wild Adventures prioritises your safety, and this guide provides the professional advice you need to stay in peak condition.
The Sun and Hydration: Your Daily Priority
People often underestimate the equatorial sun. Even on overcast days, the UV index is incredibly high. High-SPF sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat are mandatory. Furthermore, the combination of altitude and travel can lead to rapid dehydration. Always drink bottled or purified water provided by your guide, and aim to drink significantly more than you would at home.
Managing the Mosquito Factor
Malaria represents a real risk in many parts of East Africa. We strongly advise consulting a travel clinic at least six weeks before your departure to discuss anti-malarial prophylaxis. On the ground, the “mechanical barrier” is your best defence. Wear long sleeves and trousers after dusk, use high-quality DEET-based repellent, and always sleep under the mosquito nets provided by your accommodation.
Tsetse Flies and Other Pests
In certain savanna parks, Tsetse flies can be a nuisance. They are attracted to dark colours—especially blue and black. Stick to the classic safari palette of khaki and light brown. If you are walking in the forest, “blouse” or tuck your trousers into your socks to prevent ants and ticks from reaching your skin.
Dietary Safety and ‘Safari Tummy’
The food at our partner lodges is prepared to high international standards. However, if you are exploring local markets, follow the golden rule: “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.” Avoid ice in your drinks unless you are certain it is made from purified water, and always wash your hands thoroughly before meals—especially after a long game drive.
Emergency Protocols and Insurance
Every Ngaro Wild safari is equipped with a first-aid kit and a radio/mobile link to our base. However, comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation is an absolute requirement for all our guests. In the rare event of a medical emergency, being covered for ‘flying doctors’ ensures you get the best possible care without delay.
