Volcanoes National Park: The Sanctuary of the Great Virungas

Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) is a dramatic and awe-inspiring destination in northwestern Rwanda. As Africa’s oldest national park, established in 1925, it protects a steep-sloped mountain range that forms part of the Virunga Mountains. This is a land of misty rainforests, bamboo thickets, and towering peaks that serve as one of the last strongholds for the endangered Mountain Gorilla.

The Legacy of Dian Fossey

The park gained international fame through the work of American primatologist Dian Fossey, who established the Karisoke Research Center here in 1967.

  • The Dian Fossey Tomb: Visitors can hike to the site where Fossey was buried alongside her favorite gorilla, Digit, a pilgrimage that pays tribute to her life-long fight against poaching.

  • The “Gorillas in the Mist” Landscape: Experience the exact environment depicted in the famous memoir and film, characterized by high-altitude clouds clinging to the volcanic cones.

Majestic Volcanic Peaks

The park encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga chain, offering world-class hiking and mountaineering:

A Haven for Rare Primates

While the gorillas are the primary draw, the park’s ecology supports other remarkable species:

Cultural and Community Heritage

The park is not just a wildlife refuge but a cultural icon. The Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village (Gorilla Guardians) provides an immersive look at Rwandan culture.

  • Traditional Dance: Witness the powerful Intore dance, once performed for the kings of Rwanda.

  • Sustainable Tourism: Learn how former poachers have become protectors of the forest through community-led ecotourism initiatives.

Essential Travel Information

  • Accessibility: Located just 2 hours from the capital, Kigali, making it the most accessible gorilla destination in the world.

  • Gorilla Permits: Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board and require advance booking due to high demand.

  • Climate: A highland tropical climate ensures cool temperatures year-round, with rain expected at any time.

“In the heart of the Virungas, nature speaks a language of power and grace. Volcanoes National Park is more than a destination; it is a testament to the survival of the wild.”
