Choosing when to visit East Africa is one of the most critical decisions in your travel planning. While both Uganda and Rwanda are year-round destinations, the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. At Ngaro Wild Adventures, we want to ensure you time your visit to perfectly match your wildlife goals, whether that’s clear trekking trails or the lush, bird-rich landscapes of the emerald season.

The Peak Dry Seasons: June to September & December to February

These windows represent the most popular times to visit. During these months, the rains subside, and the sun dominates the sky. For many travellers, this is the “Goldilocks” zone for several reasons:

  • Optimised Wildlife Viewing: In savanna parks like Murchison Falls or Akagera, animals congregate around permanent water sources. The thinning vegetation makes spotting predators like lions and leopards significantly easier.
  • Easier Trekking: The forest floor in Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park is naturally damp, but during the dry season, the trails are much firmer. This makes the steep inclines more manageable and reduces the humidity levels under the canopy.
  • Clear Skies for Photography: Without the tropical haze, the lighting is crisp, and the mountain vistas are crystal clear—perfect for capturing the silhouettes of the Virunga volcanoes.

The ‘Emerald’ Season: March to May & October to November

Don’t let the term “rainy season” deter you. For the discerning traveller, the wet seasons offer a more intimate and visually stunning experience. Uganda and Rwanda transform into a vibrant, brilliant green.

Why consider the wet season? Firstly, the parks are quieter. You’ll often have sightings all to yourself. Secondly, this is the prime time for birdwatchers; migratory species arrive in incredible numbers, and the locals are in full song. Additionally, some luxury lodges offer reduced ‘low season’ rates, making high-end safaris more accessible.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February: Excellent for both trekking and savanna safaris. It’s dry and warm. Very high demand for gorilla permits, so book early!

March, April & May: These are the “Long Rains.” Expect heavy afternoon thunderstorms. While challenging for trekking, the dust is gone, and the air is remarkably fresh. Great for those on a budget.

June to August: The start of the peak season. Ideal for the Great Migration in nearby regions and the best time for chimpanzee habituation in Kibale Forest.

September & October: The transition period. As the rains begin to return in late October, the landscape begins to bloom, offering spectacular contrast for photographers.
