Rwanda — The Land of a Thousand Hills Africa’s Most Extraordinary Comeback Story
Why Rwanda?
Rwanda is one of Africa’s most remarkable destinations. Small, safe, clean and incredibly well organised, it has transformed itself into one of the continent’s premier travel experiences. Nestled in the heart of Central Africa, it offers world-class gorilla trekking, stunning highland scenery, rich culture and a story of resilience that moves every visitor who comes here. It is compact enough to see a lot in a short time, yet deep enough to keep you coming back.
The Safari Scene
Rwanda is not a classic savannah safari destination — it is something altogether different. The landscape is defined by rolling green hills, volcanic peaks, dense ancient forests and sparkling lakes. The wildlife experiences here are intimate, rare and unlike anything else on the continent. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is considered the gold standard globally, and the country is investing heavily in becoming a high-end, low-impact tourism destination.
Top Safari Destinations:
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda’s crown jewel. Home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the Virunga volcanic mountain range. Gorilla trekking here is the most accessible in the region — treks are generally shorter than in Uganda, making it popular with those on tighter schedules. The park also offers Dian Fossey’s research centre trail, a deeply moving experience.
Nyungwe Forest National Park One of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. Home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys and over 300 bird species. The canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor is one of Rwanda’s most thrilling experiences.
Akagera National Park Rwanda’s only savannah park and a genuine conservation success story. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and rhinos in 2017, making it a Big Five destination again. Game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema and stunning wetland scenery make this a very underrated park.
Lake Kivu A vast, beautiful lake on the border with DR Congo, surrounded by hills and small islands. Perfect for relaxation, kayaking, island hopping and fresh seafood. A popular add-on at the end of a gorilla trekking trip.
Kigali One of Africa’s cleanest, safest and most walkable capitals. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a powerful and essential visit. Great food scene, vibrant arts culture, excellent coffee and easy to navigate. Many visitors spend 1–2 days here at the start or end of their trip.
Gishwati-Mukura National Park Rwanda’s newest national park and an emerging destination for chimpanzee tracking and forest walks. Less visited, which means a quieter, more personal experience.
