Uganda — The Pearl of Africa East Africa’s Best Kept Safari Secret

Why Uganda?

Uganda sits at the heart of East Africa, bordered by Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, DR Congo and South Sudan. It is one of the most biodiverse countries on the continent — home to more primate species than anywhere else in the world, dramatic landscapes, and some of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife. Unlike Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda remains relatively undiscovered, meaning fewer crowds, more authentic experiences and incredible value for money.

The Safari Scene

Uganda offers a completely different safari experience to the classic East African savannah. Here you get a mix of dense rainforest, open savannah, wetlands, crater lakes and the mighty River Nile — all in one country. Whether you want to track primates through misty forests, watch elephants cross the plains or white-water raft one of the world’s great rivers, Uganda delivers.

Top Safari Destinations:

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Home to almost half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking here is considered one of the greatest wildlife experiences on the planet. Permits are required and sell out months in advance.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda’s most visited park. Famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, huge hippo pods along the Kazinga Channel, elephants, buffalo and over 600 bird species. The boat cruise is unmissable.

Murchison Falls National Park Uganda’s largest national park, split by the River Nile. The Murchison Falls themselves — where the Nile forces through a narrow 7-metre gorge — are breathtaking. Excellent game drives with lions, giraffes, elephants and large croc populations on the Nile cruise.

Kibale Forest National Park The best place in the world for chimpanzee tracking. Also home to 12 other primate species. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary nearby is a top birding spot.

Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda’s most remote and wild park. Semi-arid landscape, huge skies and exceptional game viewing including cheetah and caracal. Feels completely off the beaten track.

Lake Mburo National Park The closest park to Kampala. Great for walking safaris, horse riding and night drives. Zebras, impalas, elands and hippos. A perfect add-on for short itineraries.

Rwenzori Mountains The Mountains of the Moon. Snow-capped peaks on the equator, dramatic trekking routes and unique Afroalpine vegetation. For the serious adventurer.

Sipi Falls Three stunning waterfalls on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Popular for hiking, abseiling, cliff jumping and visiting local coffee farms. A great start or end to any Uganda itinerary.
